Pretty Little Liars - Sara Shepard

So, the last book I read was "Pretty Little Liars" by Sara Shepard. Sound familiar? You've probably seen the TV show based on the series of books. I'm totally addicted to it, so I decided to read them.

The book is set in Rosewood, a seemingly idyllic - and fictional - town in Pennsylvania, America. The trees are taller, the houses are bigger, the shops more expensive. Oh, and the body count is a little higher than usual, too. When Aria Montgomery, Emily Fields, Spencer Hastings and Hannah Marin's best friend, Alison DiLaurentis, goes missing in the Summer before 8th grade, the four best friends are distraught, and, unable to cope with the pain of Ali's disappearance, drift apart. The novel is set three years later, and a lot has changed - previously dorky Hanna is now the Queen Bee at Rosewood High, punky Aria has returned from Iceland, Emily is realising she may not just like boys anymore, and Spencer is overworking herself at school. All seems well and good - or as well and good as a book about murder, scandal and cheating on your significant others can be - until all the girls start getting creepy texts from the mysterious "-A". "-A" seems to know all their secrets and eventually the girls reunite to try and find out who their stalker is.

I went into this book with high expectations - the TV show is incredible, and I was expecting the books to be at least as good - after all, most books are better than their film/TV show counterparts.  I don't know whether it's because I set the mental bar too high, but I didn't enjoy this book as much as I thought I would. There are some fantastically, sarcastically funny parts, and I loved the fact that Aria has a "furious knitting habit" - a part of her personality not included in the TV show - but I found that I disliked all the characters. Every single one. Which meant that I spent the entire time sighing and rolling my eyes at whatever they were doing and wishing that they would all just grow up!

However, I'm glad I read it. The drama of the whole thing pulled me in and it's a good book for anyone who has seen the show or likes drama/romance/comedy/suspense books about really b****y, rich girls. I probably will read the next book in the series, in the hope that the characters stop being so bloody irritating.

Rating: 7/10
Would I Recommend to a Friend?: Yes, probably, if they had seen the show
Favourite Character: Spencer
Least Favourite Character: Aria
Favourite Part: Ali flashbacks
Least Favourite Part: The Spencer and Wren scenes. Sooo uncomfortable; I do not need that much information.
Time It Took To Read: Friday 23rd January - Sunday 25th January

Happy Reading
