"Attachments" by Rainbow Rowell

"Attachments" is one of those books that I've been meaning to read for ages, but never got round to it. This week, I've been at home, ill with a dreadful cough - so I decided to start it.

The story follows three people, working in a newspaper office. There's Lincoln, a computer security officer (his job is to check everyone's emails by night to see if there is anything offensive in them. A bit like an online nocturnal policeman, stalking the cyber-streets), Jennifer, who's this fantastic, perpetually moody editor, and her best friend Beth, a movie critic. Over the course of the novel, Lincoln begins reading their emails. It's part of his job, he convinces himself - although if he truly believed that, he would have sent them an email reprimanding them about 10 pages into the novel. So he keeps reading them, and finds himself being pulled further and further into their lives, into their stories of family, friends and romance. In fact, he becomes so... obsessed with them that he starts falling in love with Beth. The good news? She thinks he's cute too.

The bad news? She's got a boyfriend. A boyfriend who plays in a band.

Throughout the book - Lincoln's part at least - the whole narrative is a whole should-I-ask-her-out-should-I-not-ask-her-out palalva, with him moaning about his life in all the spaces between. Everything seems to have a constant grey cloud hovering over it - from his conversations with his mother, whom he still lives with, to going out with friends or going to work. And yes, I understand that it's meant to represent the fact that he's not really bothered about what he wants to do with his life, until the very end of the novel, etc etc. But I still preferred the Beth/Jennifer chapters.

Apart from that, it was an amazing book, much better that I expected. The ending was so good, it made me cry. Twice. I love the language in it too - there's something about the scene where Lincoln moves into his new flat that makes me really sad, and I don't know why.

Rating: 8.5/10
Would I Recommend to a Friend?: Yes, especially if they were a sucker for out-there indie romance
Favourite Character: Jennifer
Least Favourite Character: Beth
Favourite Part: The ending. Sob.
Least Favourite Part: The scenes where Lincoln goes clubbing with Justin and you can just feel the awkward when he tries to talk to a girl
Time It Took To Read: Monday 26th January - Tuesday 27th January
Favourite Quote: "A girl who never got tired of her favourite movies... who collected dresses like ticket stubs. Who could get high on the weather... You looked like the girl I loved."
